DLGA Short time student, Emiliano Grillo, of Argentina, won the 2009 Callaway Golf Jr. World Championships last week at the Torrey Pines - South Course in La Jolla, California.
The event, played over 4 days, July 14-17, comprised the best golfers from around the world. The Jr. World event was started in 1968 with the goal of bringing young golfers from all parts of the world together in hopes of achieving a greater understanding among people of differing cultures and values through the game of golf.
The Junior World Golf Championships is truly unique with a total field size exceeding 1000 golfers and representing an impressive number of countries and states. Many Junior World champions have gone on to enjoy successful careers on the PGA and LPGA Tours, including Amy Alcott, Notah Begay, Brandie Burton, John Cook, Dorothy Delasin, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin, Pat Perez, Joan Pitcock, Nick Price, Kim Shipman, Craig Stadler, David Toms and Tiger Woods.
Emiliano won the 2009 event by 4 shots with rounds of 71-79-67-68 for a three-under par 285 total.
Also finishing in the top 10 of the older boys divisionwas Marcel Puyat who attended the Leadbetter Academy over the last two full time years.
In the girls division, Dottie Ardina finished in 6th place with rounds of 75-73-72-75 for a 295 total. Cyna Rodriquez, a soon-to-be USC Trojan, started off the event slowly, but had a great last two days to finish 13th.
